MotoGP™ recap: Spain – mojo rediscovered

A title contender showdown, a Marquez wonder save and a new MotoGP™ Legend all made our 2022 trip to Jerez an unforgettable one

After riding the Portimao rollercoaster, the paddock headed to Andalusia for Round 6 of the 2022 campaign. A very special Spanish Grand Prix awaited as the fans filled the grandstands for the first time in two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It proved a special day for Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) too, with the Italian securing his first win of the year after a difficult start to the season.

Gran Premio Red Bull de España: MotoGP™ race highlights

Fans got their first taste of the two pre-season title favourites facing off, with Bagnaia and Fabio Quartararo occupying P1 and P2 respectively for the majority of the race. The reigning Champion stalked Bagnaia, applying the pressure where he could, but the Ducati rider held firm for victory which sparked jubilant scenes in the Bologna bullets’ box.

Continuing his rich vein of form, Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing) took P3 for consecutive podiums and his third of the season. The highlight of his race came with a double overtake on Jack Miller (Ducati Lenovo Team) and Marc Marquez at the final corner, while the Repsol Honda rider, who earlier in the weekend was reunited with Dani Pedrosa, also pulled off a superhuman save at the Jorge Lorenzo corner moment.

Off the track, Jorge Lorenzo was hitting the headlines too. The five-time World Champion has bestowed the honour of becoming a MotoGP™ Legend with Dorna Sports CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta on hand to induct him into the hall of fame. All in all, it was another brilliant visit to the south of Spain and we're already salivating at the prospect of what Jerez has in store for us next year.
